LOWRY EAST OPEN SPACE DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS AND DOG PARK
DENVER, CO 1.7 million
The Lowry East Open Space project included careful coordination with many entities. The Army Corps of Engineers, Urban Drainage, Lowry Redevelopment Authority and Denver Parks were all involved in the construction and planning.
This project involves relocation and excavation of the Westerly Creek Channel as an 8-10 ft. wide channel with stepping stones and several other drop structures. Over 35,000 CY was excavated and hauled off the site due to the new channel and flood plain requirements. Extensive erosion and water control were required due to the flows of Westerly Creek and adjacent runoff. Parts of the stream banks will be flattened to create riparian features. Most of the area will be seeded with native grasses. Crusher fine paths will wind throughout the spillway area for pedestrian access to the open space and the dog park. Included are cast in place stairs on the dam spillway.
The Dog Park will be enclosed with a 4 ft. high fence which will be located 25 ft away from the dam embankment and spur dike for maintenance access to the dam. At the south end of the dam there will be a set of steps constructed on the slope of the dam so that pedestrians can access the dam. The plan includes limited landscaping and trees which are mainly focused on establishing a riparian edge and irrigation is also limited for plant establishment.
