Torrential rains the night before the Aug. 9, 2008 grand opening of Utah Park left the park's two massive retention ponds completely full. "It's working just like it's supposed to," reassured Paul Hindman, executive director of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, at the event. The City of Aurora selected ECI to renovate the 47-acre park to serve a dual purpose: be the neighborhood's gathering place and become a flood-control facility. The 2008 re-development, led by ECI, resulted in greater flood storage capabilities for the city. For the re-development, ECI:
demolished most the old park site
Increased water-storage capacity by creating two new large retention ponds that replaced an old pond
constructed a new playground
installed water features
built custom shelters, a restroom building, extensive sidewalks, decorative plazas and parking lots
created buff sandstone retaining walls
built new channels
built new pump station and irrigation system to irrigate 35 acres
planted extensive sod and native seeding
